For over 30 years, I served as a chaplain for end-of-life care.  Initially, I worked with Iowa City Hospice.  Then, I became the first palliative care chaplain at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.  This gave me experience with how to support both patients and families during the dying process.  Medical care has given us so many options that it can be difficult to know when "enough is enough."  My specialty is communication and spirituality.  By listening well, I can support someone in being able to talk about what gives meaning to their life.  This can then guide them in how best to navigate the end of their life.  Also, I'm an ordained minister and value the role of ritual in the dying process.  I created a Life Journal to help with Dignity Therapy, a process that helps name one's legacy.  This can be a very significant way for a person to feel at peace about their life or to find ways to reconcile, forgive or allow for what has not been good in their life.

Now, as a death doula, I hope to use my skills to help others manage this significant period in their life.
